Phonological awareness is one of the important components for successful reading. Syllable Segmentation is the ability to identify how many syllables there are in a word (e.g. bird-house). Syllable combining is the ability to, initially, take two one-syllable words and combine them into a compound word, e.g., foot + ball = football. Syllable deletion involves taking the compound word (football) and deleting one part (Say football. (Say football. Say it again but this time don’t say ‘foot’ - what’s left is ‘ball’.) This deck of cards is comprised of cards to be used for syllable combining and syllable deletion.
