Put Reading First describes fluency as the ability to read a text accurately and automatically. When fluent readers read silently, they recognize words instantly and group words quickly in ways that help them gain meaning from what they read. These booklets contain the first 300 words from the Fry Instant Word List, which represent about 65 percent of all the words students encounter when they read. Repeated reading of these phrases helps students develop accuracy and automaticity with the most common English words. This activity is aligned to the Reading Foundational Skills: Phonics and Word Recognition and Fluency. The booklets may be used with partners or as a teacher-led activity with a group of students.
